Heading away for the long weekend or school holidays camping is a rite of passage for most Aussies, and who better to share it with than family, friends and your four-legged best mate. However, just as some people aren’t as keen on camping as others, the same can go for your dog, therefore creating a comfortable tent setup for you and your mate is essential for a successful camping trip. Here are some tips to make your tent the perfect retreat to come back to for a well-earned BBQ snag.
- Choose a tent with your dog in mind. Ensure there is enough space for both of you, considering your dog as another member of the group. Select a size that accommodates your dog’s size and sleeping habits.
- If it’s your dog’s first-time camping, practice in your backyard before heading into the bush. Acclimate your dog to the tent gradually to avoid any anxiety. Consider a trial camping trip closer to home to gauge your dog’s comfort level.
- Provide a cosy sleeping spot for your pup with a dog bed or sleeping bag designed for outdoor use. Opt for tear- and water-resistant materials for durability.
- Protect your tent from damage caused by your dog’s nails by bringing duct tape for repairs. Use a blanket to line the tent floor and keep a towel handy to clean off muddy paws.
- For summer camping, monitor overnight temperatures and consider using a cooling pad to prevent your dog from overheating. For winter camping pack some extra blankets, and potentially a coat for your dog.
With these preparations, you and your dog will be ready for a relaxing camping experience, whether you’re hitting the trails or enjoying firepit stories.
